Q.Getting around Nara: Kintetsu or JR?
Published 2026-06-10
Answer
For sightseeing, Kintetsu is the main player: it has roughly 90 stations in the prefecture versus about 33 for JR, and serves both Nara Park and Yoshinoyama. But Hōryū-ji is JR territory, and JR is faster from Osaka and Tennōji stations — the right answer is to use both.
The networks are different in scale
Twelve Kintetsu lines have stations in Nara Prefecture — including the Nara, Kyoto, Kashihara, Yoshino and Osaka lines — against just three JR West lines (the Yamatoji, Man-yō Mahoroba and Wakayama lines). That translates to roughly 90 Kintetsu stations versus about 33 for JR. Nara's railways are built around Kintetsu; incidentally, Nara was the first prefecture in Japan where every railway line was electrified.

Which station is closer to each sight?
For the classic Nara Park area, Kintetsu wins outright: Kintetsu-Nara Station is about a 5-minute walk from the park's western edge at Kōfuku-ji, while JR Nara Station is about 1.5 km away (a 20-minute walk, or a short bus ride). For the cherry blossoms of Yoshinoyama, the Kintetsu Yoshino Line is the only railway that reaches Yoshino Station. Hōryū-ji, on the other hand, is JR territory — its nearest station is Hōryūji on the JR Yamatoji Line.
| Destination | Nearest station | From the station |
|---|---|---|
| Nara Park (Kōfuku-ji, Tōdai-ji) | Kintetsu-Nara | approx. 5 min walk to the park |
| Hōryū-ji | JR Hōryūji (Yamatoji Line) | approx. 20 min walk or 10 min by bus |
| Asuka (Ishibutai, Kitora) | Kintetsu Asuka (Yoshino Line) | rental bicycle or bus |
| Yoshinoyama | Kintetsu Yoshino (Yoshino Line only) | ropeway or on foot |
| Nara Palace Site | Kintetsu Yamato-Saidaiji / Shin-Ōmiya | on foot |
Conclusion: choose by origin and destination
From Namba in southern Osaka, the Kintetsu rapid express takes about 35–40 minutes; from Tennōji, the JR Yamatoji rapid takes about 33–35 minutes; from Osaka Station, a direct JR train takes about 50 minutes. From Kyoto you can take either — about 35 minutes by Kintetsu limited express or 45 minutes by JR Miyakoji rapid. Remember: Kintetsu for Nara Park, Asuka and Yoshino; JR for Hōryū-ji and for departures from Osaka or Tennōji stations. Visitor flow data (FF-Data) shows most international visitors enter Nara via Osaka or Kyoto — this rail accessibility is the lifeline of Nara tourism.
