Q.Does Nara have an airport? How do you get there by plane?

Published 2026-06-19

Answer

Nara Prefecture has no airport with scheduled commercial flights (per Japan's MLIT airport classification, as of 2024). To fly in, you use either Osaka International (Itami), which is closer to Nara, or Kansai International, which has more flights and budget carriers. Airport limousine buses reach JR Nara Station in about 77 minutes from Itami (1,750 yen one-way) and about 103 minutes from Kansai (2,400 yen one-way), as of 2026.

No airport in Nara — yet close to one

Nara Prefecture has no airport served by scheduled commercial flights. A number of prefectures across Japan have no airport, and Nara is one of them. Even so, the Kansai region has two major gateways — Osaka International (Itami) and Kansai International — both linked directly to Nara by limousine bus and rail. No airport on home soil, but no trouble flying in either.

Limousine bus times and fares

The simplest option is the airport limousine bus. From Osaka International (Itami) to JR Nara Station it takes about 77 minutes at 1,750 yen one-way for adults (official notices say roughly 80–85 minutes). From Kansai International to JR Nara / Kintetsu-Nara stations it is about 103 minutes at 2,400 yen one-way, dropping to about 85 minutes on services that skip Yamato-Saidaiji (all figures 2026, from carrier websites). Because travel times depend on road congestion, all operators quote them as 'approx. X minutes,' and booking and buying tickets in advance is recommended.

From Kansai, rail is an option too

From Kansai International you can also reach Nara by train. The standard route, transferring at Tennōji and Hineno, takes about 96 minutes for around 1,680 yen. The fastest route, using the Rapi:t limited express with a transfer at Shin-Imamiya, runs about 87 minutes for 2,250 yen (2026, via Ekitan). The bus is transfer-free and relaxed; the train avoids road congestion and keeps better to schedule — choose based on your luggage and the time of day.

Itami or Kansai — which to choose

If Nara is your only destination, Osaka International (Itami) wins on both travel time and fare. Kansai International, on the other hand, is served by budget carriers and offers far more flight frequency and route choice on both international and domestic services (Itami has no LCC flights). In short: choose Itami if you simply want to reach Nara fast, and Kansai if you want the widest choice of flights and fares (per airport access guides, 2026).
