Q.What's new in Asuka-Fujiwara since its World Heritage inscription?

Published 2026-11-07

Answer

As of November 7, 2026, developments around Asuka-Fujiwara include a trial of 20 three-wheeled electric seated scooters, the Asuka Travel app with points to collect at around 50 locations, new Nara Kotsu sightseeing bus courses, and 66 endorsed offerings. Some were already being prepared before the World Heritage inscription decision on July 26, 2026.

Getting around: what runs when?

BRJ’s October 14, 2026 announcement describes a three-wheeled electric seated scooter trial aimed at addressing traffic congestion and etiquette issues, improving travel between visitor sites, and protecting the local living environment. Nara Kotsu’s Asuka Discovery Tour, announced on September 2, visits Asuka-dera, Ishibutai Kofun, the Man’yo culture complex (Sakafuneishi Site), and Shijin no Yakata at Kitora Kofun. The four cars of Kintetsu’s Asuka-Fujiwara Shijin Liner (Four Symbols) each feature one symbol: Suzaku, Seiryū, Byakko or Genbu. Sakurai City’s Sakurai-Asuka bus trial began in October 2025, and the Shijin Liner was announced on June 26, 2026, both before inscription. A dash means no end date is listed in the sources checked.

This is a non-exhaustive list of initiatives confirmed as of November 7, 2026. Distinguish trials and preparations that predate inscription from later launches and future plans. Many are temporary programmes or trials, and fares and operating dates may change; check each official source before visiting. No causal link is established here between inscription and the facility openings.
