Q.How do you get from Nara City's World Heritage to Asuka's?

Published 2026-06-21

Answer

Mostly a single Kintetsu run. From Kintetsu-Nara — the gateway to the World Heritage of ancient Nara — change at Yamato-Saidaiji and Kashihara-Jingūmae to reach Asuka Station in about 47 minutes for ¥700 (two transfers). And the transfer stations themselves are World Heritage: Yamato-Saidaiji is the stop for the Heijō Palace Site, and Nishinokyō, one stop away, serves Yakushi-ji and Tōshōdai-ji — a route that traces the World Heritage sites from north to south.

About 47 minutes by Kintetsu, from ancient Nara to Asuka

From Kintetsu-Nara — nearest to Tōdai-ji, Kōfuku-ji and Kasuga Taisha — to Asuka Station at the heart of the Asuka-Fujiwara capitals. By Kintetsu it's about 47 minutes at the fastest, ¥700, with two transfers at Yamato-Saidaiji and Kashihara-Jingūmae. The final hop from Kashihara-Jingūmae to Asuka takes just about 4 minutes on the Yoshino Line. Get the transfers right and the trip from Nara's top sightseeing area to Asuka is smoother than you'd think.

The transfer stations are World Heritage themselves

The neat part of this route is that the transfer and intermediate stations are World Heritage in their own right. Yamato-Saidaiji, where you change trains, is the stop for the Heijō Palace Site (part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara). One stop along the Kashihara Line, Nishinokyō serves Yakushi-ji and Tōshōdai-ji, also component sites. Hop off, look around, hop back on — you can add World Heritage stops along the way. At the southern end, Asuka Station opens onto Ishibutai, Takamatsuzuka and Kitora in the Asuka-Fujiwara group.

Once in Asuka — rental bikes or the 'Kame Bus'

Asuka's component sites are scattered across the countryside, so how you get around after arriving at Asuka Station matters. The 'Kame Bus' loop service runs from Asuka Station and the east exit of Kashihara-Jingūmae, making it easy to reach Ishibutai, Takamatsuzuka and more. The other favorite is a rental bicycle; since Asuka preserves a hilly rural landscape, electric-assist bikes are popular.

You can drive — but the train is the easy choice for sightseeing

You can drive, too, but the Keinawa Expressway linking Nara City and Kashihara north–south still has unfinished sections (see the related article), so for now ordinary roads like National Route 24 carry most of the traffic. For sightseeing, the Kintetsu route — letting you stop off at the Heijō Palace Site, Yakushi-ji and Tōshōdai-ji on the way to Asuka — is the clearer choice and pairs well with a World Heritage tour.
